  • Project title:  Food safety in an impoverished urban community in Cairo, Egypt
  • Project location: Batn El Baqara, Old Cairo, Egypt
  • Project Goals:
  • The short-term goal of this project is to train community members of Batn El Baqara, specifically the women, in basic food safety, using the WHO Five Keys, and facilitating the implementation of safe food practices in the households of Batn El Baqara.
  • The long-term goal of the project is to replicate the methodology and use the lessons learned in the current project to institute safe food practices in other communities across the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) region.   In addition it is hoped to carry forward safe food practices to the local market of Batn El Baqara.
  • Objectives:
  • 1.      Adapt WHO Five Keys to Safer Food into a viable media for the community members of Batn El Baqara;
  • 2.      Train master trainers in WHO Five Keys to Safer Food;
  • 3.      Incorporate WHO Five Keys to Safer Food as a module in the CBI/WHD Community Manual for Health.
  • 4.       Evaluation of outcomes of training to shape future food safety interventions.
  • Expected Results:
  • 1.      WHO Five Keys to Safer Food multi media training tool;
  • 2.      Master trainers established in Batn El Baqara;
  • 3.      WHO Five Keys to Safer Food module established in the CBI/WHD Community Manual for Health.
